KAISER “King” GAZA
In March of 2021, 17 year old Kaiser “King” Gaza’s best corrected acuity in his remaining “seeing” left eye was 20/150. He has had severe retinal disease as far back as August, 2020 and lost his vision in his right eye. Therefore, it became imperative that a glaucoma/cataract surgery be performed on him as soon as possible, in an effort to keep King from going completely blind. His 34 year old single Mom Abigail Gaza, a domestic helper working in a foreign country, wrote a heart-rending and desperate appeal to Marlene Cagatao, President of Alexis Louise Quiza Foundation.
Picture
Before King arrived at the doorstep of Dr. Juan Lopez of St. Luke’s Hospital in Quezon City, his case has been rejected by three other specialists in Pampanga. The costs of performing this “urgent” procedure was simply going to be astronomical, even with Dr. Lopez’s avowed willingness to forego
certain fees. Marlene Cagatao, a Covid-19 survivor, immediately reached out to the ALQFoundation Board Members and arrived at the resolution to disburse funds, largely depleted due to our curtailed ability to fundraise during the Pandemic. Marlene was determined that if there was one cause our Foundation exists for, it was King’s. Without looking back, she went ahead and pledged our aid so that Dr. Lopez could proceed with the surgery.
Picture

The operation was performed in April 19, 2021 at the Fatima University Medical Center in Antipolo, Rizal. With the help of Sponsors like you, ALQFoundation is determined to help King through this life-defining ordeal. In months to come, his continuing treatment remains with ALQFoundation as one of our major endeavors.

In line with the precautionary measures being imposed to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we are postponing our fundraising event on March 25.

We invite everyone to pray for the recovery of those who have been infected and the safety of everyone during this crucial time. Thank you...

ALQ IN ACTION: #LOVEFORTAAL N95 MASK DRIVE

For the victims of the Taal Volcano eruption in Batangas, Philippines.
In light of the disaster surrounding the eruption of the Taal Volcano, we are holding a relief operation for the victims and evacuees. Due to the high demand (but low supply) of N95 masks in the Philippines, which are used to protect the residents from the toxic ashfall, we are holding an N95 Mask Drive and have put up drop-off boxes on selected establishments in the LA area

Recent update: 40 sacks of rice delivered as a donation to the evacuees, courtesy of Hayden and Michelle Sison, ALQ Foundation Board in Manila (see photos below).

According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), as of 21 January, more than 271,000 people are affected, of whom more than 148,000 people are being assisted in over 490 evacuation centres, and over 87,000 people are with host families. The Department of Education reports that more than 300 schools are being used as evacuation centres, affecting more than 9,700 students. According to the Department of Agriculture, more than 15,000 hectares of agricultural lands have been affected. The financial cost of damage and losses to agriculture and fisheries is estimated at ₱3.17 billion (US$ 62 million), with the fisheries sector accounting for about half of the losses.

ALQ Foundation's 5th Children's Christmas Charity Football in Manila

ALQ Foundation is a proud supporter and sponsor of the recently concluded 5th Children’s Christmas Charity Football on December 15, 2019 at Manila Philippines.

All in all, about 300 children was fed and given souvenirs. Over time, we have seen how football changed the lives of abandoned and neglected children, who found meaning in the sport. It also kept them focused on practice all year round and in anticipation for the Christmas tournament.
Our advocacy has always been centered on developing the skills of indigent children and children with disabilities to make them responsible members of the society. Beyond the physical benefits of playing the sport, football builds character and strategic thinking which they will use later as adults.
Moreover, this initiative aims to:
  • Give hope for abandoned children and to improve their quality of life through football.
  • Raise awareness in the community that abandoned children and children with special needs can excel in sports through community support.
  • Foster camaraderie among children in the different children’s institution within our community.
  • Create links in the business community to help support the different needs of abandoned children and children with special needs.
  • Come up with unified team players who can compete in the local or international football competition for children with special needs.
The following teams for last year's game were:

1. Elsie Gaches Village (abandoned & surrendered children with intellectual disabilities).

2. Nayon ng Kabataan (street children)/
3. SOS Children's Village (marginalized children).
4. Tuloy sa Don Bosco (street children & marginalized children).

Our Second DPSS Adopt-a-family Partnership

Christmas Wishlist Granted

As everybody is busy prepping for Christmas Eve and doing last-minute Christmas shopping, we on the other hand, could not contain our excitement as we make two families’ Christmas wishlists come true through LA County DPSS’ “Adopt a Family” program. This is our second year as a sponsor and we are looking forward to more wishlists to fulfill and love to share especially on Christmas day.

(The Department of Public and Social Services (DPSS) Adopt-A-Family program has been a heartfelt and long-standing tradition that continues to bring smiles to hundreds of families served by DPSS. In 2018, over 1,000 generous sponsors, provided gifts to 1,500 CalWORKs families during the holiday season. Los Angeles County staff, individuals, groups, community members, and local businesses can all participate in this joyous and gratifying event by sponsoring families. Sponsors are provided with the “adoptee’s” contact information along with their “wish list” of requested items. These items may include; groceries, clothing, gift certificates or toys. Prior to the feeding date, we initially allocated for 250 children plus 30 teachers and Kiwanis volunteers. But as they say, "if it's God's will, it is God's bill".
December 12, 2019 was a very special day for us. This was the first time we have been able to reach one of the remote areas in the Philippines to serve indigenous children located at the northern hillside of Zambales at the foot of Mt. Pinatubo by Nabuclod, Floridablanca Pampanga.

It is our boldest attempt to deliver our promise of increasing the number of children we serve. It is also our first partnership with Kiwanis of Lubao Gems as our ambassadors and volunteers.

Partnering with Kiwanis is sentimental for us because Lexi was VP of the Key Club (Kiwanis High School) and an active leader of the organization throughout her high school life. Our President Marlene Cagatao was former president of the Fil-Am Kiwanis of Glendale in 2004, as well as some of our board members  who were active Kiwanis leaders.

"Kiwanis" is translated as "we build" and is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time. Our motto is "Serving the Children of the World". The alignment of both our philosophies makes them a very suitable co-advocate partner.

Prior to the feeding date, we initially allocated for 250 children plus 30 teachers and Kiwanis volunteers. But as they say, "if it's God's will, it is God's bill".  A few days before our target date, we were teary-eyed as we accept a sizable donation that would allow us to accommodate all 573 children plus 30 volunteers.

Our 4th Annual Feeding Program was a success

The Alexis Louise Quiza (ALQ) Foundation successfully celebrated its 4th Christmas outreach feeding program to children of Holy Family Parish.

Happy New Year 2018.

Sparks of Love -December 03, 2016

An early Christmas treat bringing happiness, fun and joy.

On Saturday, December 3, 2016, the Alexis Louise Quiza (ALQ) Foundation partnered with the Children’s Trust Fund of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) during the “Sparks of Love” Holiday Party with Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich at Six Flags Magic Mountain.

This is the second year ALQ Foundation has partnered with a county agency. Over 500 attending foster children and youth and their families enjoyed lunch, received gifts, had their photo taken with Santa, and gained admittance to the theme park for a whole day of fun.

Holiday cheers and presents came early to these foster children and youth this year – and to some children, this was the first time they have ever received holiday gifts. The celebration and gift giving gave an incredible meaning to the lives of these children and youth, and each went home with a story to tell and an experience of a lifetime.

ALQ Foundation is truly honored and privileged to participate and give back again and wholeheartedly donated $1,000 to the Children’s Trust Fund of DCFS.

What a fun and a beautiful blessed day!

Holy Family Church, Manila - April 24, 2016

On April 24, 2016, Sunday, ALQ Foundation conducted a feeding program and gathered around 50 street children at the Holy Family Parish Church in San Andres Bukid Manila. The Activity started @ 9:30 AM culminating in a Holy Mass celebrated by Fr. Rey Cruz, Parish priest of the diocese. The program started immediately after the mass. Fr. Rey Cruz delivered his message to the children,  accentuated Alexis' dream of sharing her blessing to the less fortunate especially the children. He,  in his narrative, underscored that unique and peculiar desire of a young girl with a big heart for children who are hungry, lost, abandoned and wasted through sheer poverty. He continued by emulating Alexis' altruistic vision and hopes that her aspiration and concern for poor children serve as an inspiration and model for the rest of humanity especially the youth. Likewise, during the program, the uncle of Alexis, Mel Quiza, delivered his opening remarks to signal the formal salvo of the activities. In his opening statements, Mel Quiza welcomed the participants, especially the real beneficiaries of the feeding program, the street children, and acknowledged the presence of the members of the Quiza  family, relatives and friends. He stressed in his statement the advocacy of the foundation in which the central thrust is the concern for the poor street children and how these neglected lot can still be a beacon of hope given proper impetus and guidance. "Just feeding them is not enough, but caring and guiding them and showing them the right way will morph them into a more productive and useful members of our society in the future when they grow up.," Mel Quiza, added. Those were inspiring words, indeed, from Mr Mel Quiza, the uncle of Alexis.
What made the children all agape was when the Jollibee mascot appeared and you can see from their faces the excitement and awe that surely they have not experienced before. Jollibee provided the food and drinks and they also carried the flow of the program to its successful end.
More than the feeding, eating and feasting, the children were also feted to some entertainment and game extravaganza cum prizes and toys. It was evident from the young and innocent faces of these children how they wished the fun and enjoyment they have experienced from this activities will go on forever and not just ephemeral and shortly go back to their bleak and unforgiving world again.
For one brief but memorable moment, the children felt they were, after all, also children of the universe and has the right to be treated as such and must not be segregated and abandoned. For once, they felt needed, loved and part of this world and also has the right to be happy and free.
To add luster to the occasion, since its Mama Poy's(Alexis Grandma), birthday on 30th April by requesting the children to sing a birthday song to her while she blows the candle. This snapshot added colors to the already festive and happy moments  that special day for them.
The children, for whom this feeding program was really intended, left the venue beaming with excitement, tummies filled and satisfied at least for the time being and toys clutched in their tiny hands. They know in their young minds that the joy and happiness they experienced were only fleeting but will indelibly be etched in their hearts forever...til another feeding program!
ALQ Foundation wish to thank the sponsors which made this event possible. Flordeliza Quiza, Mel & Tisha Quiza, Polly & Anne Quiza, Ronnie & Melissa Butiong, Baby Estavillo and the presence of Alexis' cousins, Renzo, Isabel and Matt Quiza.
Thank you.
